WOMENAID INTERNATIONAL, a humanitarian aid and development agency that actively campaigns against violations of human rights, is pleased to be supporting the first global observance of the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, 25th November 2000 in the South Caucasus.

WomenAid  has recently launched a successful multimedia anti-trafficking awareness campaign and is now extending its activities by introducing further civil society initiatives within the Caucasus.  Two of these initiatives are the 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER VIOLENCE and the WHITE RIBBON CAMPAIGN.

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER VIOLENCE runs from 25th November to 10th December and highlights the following:

  • November 25 : the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

  • December 1 : World AIDS Day.

  • December 6 : the Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre.

  • December 10 : International Human Rights Day.

Since 1991, over 800 organisations in more than 90 countries have participated in this international campaign, calling for the elimination of all forms of violence against women. The campaign symbolically links violence against women and human rights, emphasizing that all forms of violence, whether perpetrated in public or private, are a violation of human rights.  Public education and media awareness are a top priority in global efforts to combat violence against women.

THE FIRST CAUCASUS 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM COORDINATION COMMITTEE has been established by WomenAid. The Coordination Committee includes more than 35 representatives of civil society organisations and government sectors, all organising a variety of activities during the 16 days - 25 November to 10 December.

See Co-ordination Committee Members and  16 Days Calendar of Activities.

WHAT IS THE WHITE RIBBON CAMPAIGN?

The White Ribbon Campaign is the largest effort, in the world, of men working to end men's violence against women.  This campaign, now for the first time being introduced in the Caucasus, seeks to support what every man can do to help end men's violence against women.  The White Ribbon Campaign was initiated in 1991 when a few Canadian men responded to the horrific massacre of 14 young female engineer students by urging men everywhere to ‘speak out’ against violence against women and to wear a white ribbon on their lapel to ‘evidence’ their commitment to

  • never to commit violence against women,

  • never to condone violence against women, and

  • never to remain silent about violence against women.

White Ribbon lapel pins will be presented to several well-known Georgian men at the press conference.
