PAKISTAN

WomenAid received a request for a Mammomat mammography (x-ray) machine from the Family Planning Association of Pakistan as no public service mammography facilities were available.  WomenAid obtained a Mammomat B mammography machine and, in partnership with Pakistan International Airlines and Siemens, it was transported to Karachi and commissioned into service.

Our partners wrote:-

"I would like to express my deepest gratitude for this very generous donation.  We all understand and appreciate the great help you have rendered for such a worthy cause.  I also realise the immense effort that you have had to make to provide help to Pakistani women.  I hope this co-operation would go a long way in helping our women, and the Association, in its services to the nation."

Begum Tajwar Shaukat, Hon. General Secretary, Karachi Zone-Sindh.

"Kindly accept our deep appreciation and sincere gratitude for the invaluable contribution made by your organisation for the benefit of millions of Pakistani women who are certainly going to benefit from it."
Professor Laeeq Ahmad Khan, Executive Officer, Family Planning Association of Pakistan, PAASBAN

ZIMBABWE
WomenAid has received a request for a new mammography machine from the Mater Dei Hospital built in 1952 in Matebeleland, Zimbabwe.  The hospital has the only mammography machine in the west of the country but as the machine is over 25 years old the images obtained are no longer of any diagnostic value.  South Africa is the nearest place for a mammography for those women who can afford to travel there but for those who are poor there is no possibility of breast screening.

Breast cancer is such a prevalent cancer and is so easily treated in the early stages it is vital that all women can be offered this service.  The Mater Dei Hospital needs a new mammography machine with biopsy facilities and will provide screening services to all women at risk.

FUNDS SOUGHT:  £70,0000.
