  • Breast Cancer is the most frequent tumour in women throughout the world  

  • Since the middle of this century breast cancer has dramatically increased in industrialized countries: between 1980 and 1985 breast cancer incidence increased 26% 

  • Breast cancer is now rapidly increasing in developing countries 

  • The International Agency for Research on Cancer estimates 500,000 deaths world-wide from breast cancer world-wide in 2000 

  • The possibility of breast cancer increases with age 

  • 70% of breast cancer cases are due to an unknown cause 

  • Approximately 5% of breast cancer is inherited

UNITED KINGDOM 

  • 1 in 12 women in the United kingdom will develop breast cancer 

  • Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women aged 35-54 

  • The United Kingdom has the highest mortality rate for breast cancer in the world
